On Cogitation

A handy little problem solving exersise I’ve discovered lately. In my Hipster PDA I now have a card behind all my next actions lists called ‘To Cogitate’ - problems that I’m having trouble with or things I’ve dried up on brainstorming.

This list gets reviewed with all my next actions/project lists in my daily review, and the issues go to the back of my head. I’ve found my mind can do a lot of processing on the background on issues on the list, and ideas just… well, spring to mind. I’ve done this with writing issues (what pieces of information do I need to subtley dump on the reader in my novel, and how can I do it without them noticing?) and with brainstorming university work (coming up with different kinds of interactives or museum kiosks for a couple of assignments).

Rather handy.

On concerns

Novel’s nearly finished, and I’m a little worried. Specifically, what I’m going to do with a big novel-shaped gap in my life. I mean, I’ve still got a lot of editing and rewriting and transcribing and typing to do, but still, the gun part’s nearly over and I’m not looking forward to trying to go without. I might try shifting to a different medium soon. Maybe try some painting.
Also, I’m going to set this article off Diyplanner as my homepage, as it looks like a handy article for getting over this kind of thing.

Phlink looks hot. Ah the possibilities. But then I see the expense, and remember I don’t really get enough phone traffic to justify it. But still, it could be useful in the future, and so it’s getting a del.icio.us’someday’ tag.

I’m suffering my three-mothly GTD itch. Paper and Moleskines are nice and all, but there was a recent Tao of Mac post about an oh-so-pretty Ruby GTD thing that’s all Ajax-y and pretty and whatnot

Oh well. I will have to remain faithful as much as I can then.

5/6th of the second draft of a novel! Woo!
It’s going to be awesome. Then again, if you ask me tomorrow, I’ll probably tell you the precise opposite.

I purchased a copy of the fine game Hello Kitty Roller Rescue recently. Truly, a seminal gaming experience. Honest.
Well, okay, the platforming is a bit… flaccid. Average 3D platformer status. But there are unlockables and sanrio characters coming out of Kitty’s pretty little earholes, so this is tolerable.
